Prostate Cancer Living with Prostate Cancer

Men can live a long time with prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is quite common. The National Cancer Institute reports that by age 75, half to three-quarters of men will have cancerous changes in their prostate glands. Each year, almost 180,000 men in the U.S. will be diagnosed with the disease. Eight percent will develop significant symptoms and 3 percent will die of their cancer. But the majority of men have very slow-growing tumors, which may never lead to major symptoms. That's why doctors in many cases suggest "watchful waiting." Doctors monitor their patient carefully, but do not rush to treatment.
